THOROUGHBRED RDA ORO BLANCO

PALOMINO AND WHITE (DOMINANT WHITE SABINO) JC THOROUGHBRED AND APHA STALLION; DUAL REGISTERED (TRIPLE PENDING).  HALF BROTHER TO SATO. FOAL DATE: 5/15/2005.

Even experienced horse people often believe that Thoroughbreds only exist only in the base colors of bay, chestnut, black, and grey. However, throughout history, we can find evidence of a colored thoroughbred appearing every now and then.  Spotted Thoroughbreds, i.e. overo Thoroughbreds were documented to have occurred as early as the 1700's.

White-splattered chestnut, Airdrie Apache was the 1993 offspring from the white mare, Not Quite White (1989). Not only did Airdrie Apache come from a white mare but, overall, his pedigree carries 13 white-producing ancestors: eight doses from The Tetrarch, two more from The Tetrarch's sire, Roi Herode, two counts from Black Toney with the remaining one from Hyperion.

Oro Blanco is the half brother to SATO, also a sabino stallion, in Canada.  Sato had a Breyer horse made after his likeness due to being a rare colered Thoroughbred.

One of the horses that plays “Spirit Horse Silver” in “The Lone Ranger” with Johnny Depp, Arctic Bright White, is a close relative to Oro Blanco.

Thoroughbreds have a number of white spotting patterns (also called dominant white or extreme sabino).

White spotting (W) is family of spontaneous mutations of the KIT gene--- this is why white horses crop up from seemingly ordinary, solid-colored parents.

The W-mutation for this family consists of W20 and W22 alleles. His coat allows him to be dual registered as a Paint—a commodity that was the driving force behind his popularity at stud. His registration with the APHA is currently pending.

Colored Thoroughbreds are in high demand both here in the U.S. and abroad. The Thoroughbred is one of the only breeds that crosses very well and can be used to refine lines of sports horses to include dressage, eventing, endurance, polo, as well as Western disciplines.  ATO Horses is also integrating racing bloodlines of top Thoroughbred sires and dams to offer breeders and trainers a chance to develop a colored foal for the track.  And while we strive for beautiful colors and patterns, we prioritize conformation, movement, and height.
